The Barriers and Drivers for the ramp-up of Power-to-X in non-OECD Countries

Diogo da Conceição Rego - August 24, 2022

Power-to-X (PtX) is a term used to describe a variety of technologies that convert surplus electricity from renewable energy sources into other forms of energy, such as green hydrogen, ammonia, or synthetic fuels. The ramp-up of a global PtX industry can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change while creating new jobs and economic opportunities in the clean energy sector. In addition, it can improve energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, diversifying the energy mix and making it more resilient to shocks.

The future you want is out there and it's called public transport

Keerthi Krishnakumar - Juli 13, 2023

How many times have you left your house, gleefully excited to “carpe diem”, only to be met with bumper-to-bumper traffic that quickly sucks all that joy out of you? Be it congestion on the way back from work after a long day or on the way to your loved ones’ home for Christmas, traffic has become an unavoidable part of our lives, but does it need to be?

Cultivating Sustainability: a Call-to-Action on Earth Day and beyond

Arturo Martinez Oest - May 2, 2023

Besides being a good day to post pictures of ourselves hugging trees and pretending to be one with nature while doing online shopping to get the most fashionable and “original” synthetic clothes, Earth Day is a day that reminds each one of us of our duty to protect the planet and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. It is a day that serves as a call to action to rethink our relationship with the environment and take steps towards a more sustainable and fairer world. But it should not be a reminder only every 22 April, but daily.

Life wisdom I learnt from research conferences

Menglu Neupert-Zhuang - April 11, 2023

When I started counting, I realised that I had been at more than 30 research conferences and workshops in the past 3 years. I still have flashbacks in my mind about each of them, like in a film. The sheer number of times that I was out there in front of an audience astonished even me. I was there as a listener, a comment provider, frequently a speaker and sometimes even a session chairperson.

A Cautionary Tale: The Case of Greenwashing

María José Valverde - March 14, 2023

It is an inescapable reality that climate change has come knocking on our front door – and those on the frontlines battling the impacts of climate change can tell us that some have experienced this call earlier than others. However, it is undeniable that this is the issue of our (and future) generation(s). In fact, it is now evident that climate change, sustainability and ESG criteria (Environmental, Social and Governance) have become trending topics across countries, sectors, industries and even political parties, given that societal perceptions and consumer demands for better accountability have changed.

Rediscovering our relationship with Nature – beyond profit and optimisation

María José Valverde - November 4, 2022

Climate change has taken a prominent role in daily conversations among friends, colleagues and strangers – and so has climate anxiety. However, on a personal level, having the opportunity to work on these issues every day helps me to keep this anxiety away (a bit). It allows me to “put a face” to a sometimes very abstract and complex problem – and to witness concrete results. As my father normally says: no se preocupe, ocúpese, or do not worry, just get busy.

Climate change and the importance of gender

Luis Zamarioli - October 10, 2022

In Germany, men account for 86.3% of the board members of companies listed in the German Share Index (DAX). That puts Germany behind US, UK and France in terms of equality. Which gender benefits the most from corporate decarbonisation and climate transition incentives, men or women? In the executive councils of German financial services firms, men account for over 90% of the representation. With those numbers, who are the most likely candidates to profit from the exponential growth in the German green sector, men or women? With 65% of male representation in the Bundestag, approved policies to fight or protect the country against climate change may be skewed to benefit who, men or women?

Insights from the IPCC Report on Climate Change Mitigation

Michael König - October 5, 2022

When addressing the climate crisis, the financial sector must play its part. Within the recently published United Nations report on climate change mitigation, one of the chapters specifically deals with “Investment and Finance” (Chapter 15) and shows how finance is an enabler of climate change mitigation. In the last three years, I was fully involved in the role as Chapter Scientist and collaborated with a team of climate finance experts from 21 countries in assessing evidence on the relation between finance and climate change.
