Brochure Colombia 2015: “Microcredits to reduce the vulnerability of small farmers against climate risks - the perspective of the Colombian Andes”

In Colombia, climatic changes related to El Niño and La Niña have brought serious challenges for farmers, showing that they do not have the capacities to manage risks and adapt to climate fluctuations and extreme events. Microfinance institutions have enormous potential to close the gap in accessing credit in rural areas and catalyze the implementation of alternatives that reduce the vulnerability of small farmers in the face of climate change.

Brochure Peru 2015: “Microcredits to reduce the vulnerability of small farmers against climate risks - the perspective of the Peruvian Andes”

In order to manage the various risks to which Peruvian farmers are exposed to, many of them supplement their farm income with labor in other agricultural units or with non-agricultural income. However, they generally have access to unskilled and low-paid work. Only few have access to the formal financial system and, in the absence of insurance, they rely on the social protection of the state. Microfinance institutions have enormous potential to close the gap in accessing credit in rural areas and catalyze the implementation of alternatives that reduce the vulnerability of small farmers in the face of climate change.
