Feasibility Study: Promotion of RE and EE in Morocco through private Financial Institutions

Loans for Renewable Energy (RE) projects and Energy Efficiency (EE) measures provided through the local commercial banking sector could potentially help Micro, Small and Medium Size Enterprises (MSME), as well as retail customers to increase their access to reliable, clean and affordable energy sources even in remote areas. Financial sector development and the promotion of RE and EE measures are focal areas of Morocco’s National Plan for the Development of RE and EE and an explicit objective of the German-Moroccan bilateral Financial Cooperation.

The Feasibility Study aimed to

  • identify the potential market demand for RE and EE loans in Morocco,
  •  analyse the capacity of the local banking sector to extend such loans,
  • determine the potential need for Technical Assistance (TA) to banks, end-users and suppliers.

The Feasibility Study was thereby meant to provide the basis for a potential finance facility for local banks earmarked for RE and EE measures and for improving the supply of RE and EE equipment.
