Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy in Nairobi, Kenya
Frankfurt School’s well-established Summer Academy concept has grown wings. Following three extraordinary successful Sustainable Energy Finance (SEF) Summer Academies in Frankfurt, Germany, the FS-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance (the Centre) organised a brand new Summer Academy with a strong African regional focus in Nairobi, Kenya.
Taking place from 21 to 26 October 2012 the course content covered relevant topics for sustainable energy finance in Africa, including the potential for RE/EE projects in Africa, challenges and opportunities for successful investments in clean energy technologies, economics and dynamics of the most significant RE sources and practical examples through case studies in the region.
The launch date of the SEF Summer Academy in UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi proved excellent! The Centre received an impressive number of 700 applications, confirming the high demand for clean energy solutions in Africa. A total of 28 participants contributed their own regional expertise, complementary experiences, and specialised knowledge to create a productive learning environment for everyone involved. Experienced senior trainers and practitioners from UNEP, the Development Bank of South Africa and Carbon Africa Project Developers imparted their academic, technical and financial knowledge of RE and EE issues.
In a nutshell this year’s pilot Summer Academy was a huge success to address the rising and often expressed demand for SEF training on the African continent. For the team, it was very exciting, considering that it was the first time such a programme was being implemented in Kenya.
Preparations for new Summer Academy courses are in full swing. This year offers a band new concept and even better networking opportunities than in 2012. Interested to learn more? Come and check out 2013's Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academies in Frankfurt and Mombasa!
